Transition & Pathways

Successful procedures are in place for Kindergarten-Prep and Year 6-7 transition. The focus is to prepare children and their families for the next stage of learning. The school liaises closely with local kindergartens. They provide us with Prep transition statements and dialogue to assist in understanding our new students. This ensures a strong foundation for developing appropriate learning programs.  New students beginning in Prep are invited to attend several transition days in Term 4 of the preceding year in preparation for starting at Yarra PS.

Students in Year 6 prepare for secondary school over Years 5 and 6 and the school liaises closely with local secondary schools. Students and their families have the opportunity to visit a range of secondary schools during Year 5, and access to enrolment procedures for all local secondary schools. A transition day in Term 4 of Year 6 provides students with a chance to spend a day in their chosen secondary school.

Several important transitions occur within the school; from Prep to Year 1, Year 2 to Year 3 and Year 4 into Year 5. Yarra PS aims to prepare students for these important transitions by closely monitoring students as they move between these grade levels.  Cross grade events including buddy events, for students to get to know students in other grades and provide opportunities for students to experience school life in other grades, are regular events throughout the school year.

Yarra Primary School 2019 Transition Program

At Yarra Primary School, we believe a seamless transition from pre-school to Foundation is important in establishing a positive start to school life. During our transition program your child/children will participate in a number of exciting activities led by our Specialist teachers in Science, Art, Japanese and Performing Arts. Children are encouraged to participate in the transition program in order to familiarise them with the school and better prepare them for the year ahead.  Your child/children will also be given the opportunity to get to know the Foundation teachers and meet their Year 6 buddy.

During the Transition Program, parents will be invited to information sessions that will cover topics of interest such as, the organisation and attendance of Preps in the first weeks of the new school year, the use of Compass (communication tool), details of ordering School Uniforms online and the registration process of YOSH (Yarra Out of School Hours program),and the process for lunch orders(Fridays only).  They will also cover the participation of parents as volunteers,School Councillors and classroom helpers.
